Tamil Nadu Marriage Registration Act

The Act was passed in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on 30th June 2009. However, due to opposition from various quarters (especially Muslims), it was not implemented immediately. It came into force from 24th November 2009.

After the Act came into force, registration of marriages became compulsory in Tamil Nadu.

According to this, the marriage should be registered within 90 days from the registrar's office. If you register within 90 days of marriage, you only need to pay a fee of Rs 100. If you register within 91 to 150 days of marriage, you will have to pay a total of Rs 150 along with a penalty fee of Rs 50. If you register after 150 days of marriage, you will have to pay a maximum fee of Rs 1300 along with a penalty.

Proof of age, proof of residence and place of marriage should be submitted at the time of marriage registration.
