Until a few years ago, Muslim marriages could be registered and certified under the Special Marriage Act. There is a thirty working day wait for the certificate under the Special Marriage Act. It is a difficult procedure. But now this issue has been resolved and Muslims are also allowed to register their marriages under the Tamil Nadu Marriage Registration Act. At the same time, Muslim marriages prior to 2009 cannot be registered under the Tamil Nadu Marriage Registration Act. Pre-2009 Muslim marriages continue to be registered under the Special Marriage Act. Pre-2009 Hindu and Christian marriages can be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act - 1954 and the Indian Christian Marriage Act - 1872 and get a government marriage certificate on the same day.
