Inter caste Marriages - Registration, Government Certificate and Procedures
As far as marriage laws in India are concerned, there are no caste-specific laws. Inter-caste marriages can also be registered and a government marriage certificate can be obtained based on the marriage laws of the respective specific religions. It can also be registered under the Special Marriage Act - 1954.
To obtain a mixed caste marriage certificate, the community certificate issued by the government must be submitted as an additional document at the time of marriage registration.
Inter-caste marriages generally take place between different castes of Hinduism.
Some state governments, such as Tamil Nadu, provide various benefits and gifts to inter-caste couples to encourage inter-caste marriages. But to get such benefits, one of the couple must belong to Dalit or tribal community. An ordinance issued by the Tamil Nadu government last year states that couples in mixed marriages will be given priority in government jobs.
Children born to mixed marriages are issued a government community certificate specifying the caste of either the mother or the father, as per the parents' choice.
