Child Marriage Prohibition Act
The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 makes any marriage between a girl under 18 years of age and a man under 21 years of age illegal.
Some argue that child marriage leaves girls physically and mentally vulnerable. Such people also think that these children lack intellectual maturity, lack the mental strength to face problems and are always forced to depend on men.
According to section 9,10,11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006, parents or guardians of child marriages, grooms, religious leaders officiating marriages, relatives, friends who participated in marriages, persons who assisted in marriages, organizations, marriage brokers, etc. They are considered guilty and are liable to imprisonment for 2 years or fine up to one lakhs rupees or both.
Promoting and facilitating child marriage are punishable offences.
