As far as TN is concerned a Hindu marriage can be registered under the following acts, HM act 1955, TN 2009 & HM sec7a 1968 In order to register marriages   under   the above-mentioned acts, the husband and the wife both should Belong to Hindu religion only, moreover the marriage function should have conducted   as per Hindu religious rituals & culture. As an exception it is not mandatory to conduct religious rituals while registering marriage under HM sec 7a 1968 For registering HM under TN 2009 and HM sec 7a acts, we need to produce two witnesses. Whereas for the HM act 1955 we need to produce 3 witnesses. It is mandatory that the witnesses should have participated/attended the marriage function and act as   the eyewitnesses for the marriage.
